A New York Fairytale
High Line by James Corner-Field and Diller Scofidio + Renfro is the latest miracle of Manhattan
The disused railway line became a park elevated above the city.
Text by Tzvetana Chipkova
High Line is a part of the railway line built in the 1930’s in order to transport cattle to the New York abattoirs in the western part of Manhattan. After it was totally disused in 1980’s it turned into a dangerous place, a haunt of prostitutes and drug dealers. All showed that the line was doomed and its being torn down was only a matter of time, but then the writer Joshua David and the artist Robert Hammond met in 1999. They decided to fight for saving it and established the non-profit organization Friends of the High Line. A ten-year battle started and it was completed with a huge celebration in June of this year when the Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg opened the first section of the new urban park.
The reconstruction was done by James Corner-Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
