Wooden Hills
Maritime Youth House in Copenhagen by PLOT, JDS + BIG.
The project is from 2004, when Julien de Smedt and Bjarke Ingels were partners in PLOT. The studio attracted quite an interest and international acclaim. PLOT broke up in January 2006 and Julien de Smedt established in Copenhagen his own studio JDS which later on expanded through offices in Brussels and Oslo. Bjarke Ingels created his studio BIG.
The Maritime Youth House in Sundby harbour, Copenhagen, was designed for two clients who had to share the facilities: a sail club and a youth house. Their desires were opposite: the youth house wanted outdoor space for the kids to play, the sail club needed most of the site to park their boats... The building is the literal result of the negotiations of the architects with these two contradictory demands: when the deck bubbles up it allows for boat storage underneath, still letting the kids run and play above.
