Zaharna fabrika quarter, Sofia
The owners of the listed factory want to job her off by leaving the site to demolition by “unidentified tresspassers”.
Aneta Vasileva of WhAT Association explores the site:
“…The Sugar Factory is a monument of culture (by law), and it could not be torn down for the purpose of investment intentions on the part of the owner, but it could be left to the process of self-demolition. The other, more difficult option is reconstruction. The Master Plan of Sofia states that the Sugar Factory falls within zone SMF. The building height restriction for this zone is 26 meters, but that could be exceeded, when substantiated by a Detailed Site Development Plan or a Work Site Development Plan, if the zone borders huge boulevards.
... There is no use of pathetic “salvation”. We have heard enough calls “Save the old buildings!”, and we believe that nothing much would be saved applying naive romanticism. The same applies to the Sugar Factory. It needs a solution which would subject the saving of this monument to some solid business logic, so that it is useful to society, politicians and its owner. And then the building could survive. And be useful.”
